Why Are We So Hard on Ourselves?

Peers often ask me: “If the machine turns on and runs, isn’t that enough? Why go through the hassle of a 58-point checklist?”

In our assembly shop, every machine has a blue “medical chart” attached. Every item requires a signature from an engineer. Once, a machine bound for Europe hit a snag at Item 47: “High-Load Stability.” The cooling fan was just 2 decibels louder than the standard.

You could barely hear it. Someone suggested, “It doesn’t affect the performance. The client’s factory is noisy anyway—they’ll never know. Just ship it.”
